North American flying squirrels have been found to produce a diverse repertoire of ultrasonic vocalizations. While these vocalizations have been described in Northern and Southern flying squirrels, vocalizations of the recently-discovered Humboldt's flying squirrel (Glaucomys oregonensis) have yet to be thoroughly investigated. Using ultrasonic recorders, Travis will be recording flying squirrels in Humboldt and San Bernardino counties where Humboldt's flying squirrels and the San Bernardino subspecies (Glaucomys oregonensis californicus) are found, respectively. He will describe call-types based on sonic and temporal properties and investigate variation between the two counties. In addition to elucidating vocal repertoire and call variation in flying squirrels in California, Travis also plans to create an open-source call database to assist researchers in identifying flying squirrel calls and bolster the use of acoustic recorders as a non-invasive survey technique.
